BOCA Compliant Stairs

The following is an overview of which Lapeyre Stair products comply with BOCA standards. Actual codes and/or local code officials should be consulted for specific requirements and compliance. See Our Code Compliance for more information.

Alternating Tread Stairs

The 1999 National Building Code permits alternating tread stairs with a minimum projected tread of 5 inches and a minimum tread depth of 8.5 inches as a means of egress from mezzanines, roofs and various areas in penal facilities; exception as a means of egress from a mezzanine area not more than 250 sq. ft. not serving more than 5 occupants, shall have a minimum projected tread of 8.5 inches, minimum tread depth of 10.5 inches. Stair Type/Applications:

  • This Stair can be used only in F1 and F2 (Factory) or S (Storage) Occupancies.
  • This stair may not be used where an accessible stair is required.
  • 21" sphere rule
  • Open treads, open risers
  • 1014.3 Ex 4 allows a 36" wide stair if the whole building has < 50 occupants
  • The guard rail is allowed to also be used as a handrail. Therefore, the handrail does not need to be a separate rail from the guard rail.
  • Guards and Handrails may be combined into one rail with the height set at 42". (1022.2.2 Ex)
  • The baluster spacing is designed to comply with BOCA's 21" sphere rule and is adjustable within those guidelines.
  • Handrail not required if less than three risers. (1014.7 Ex 1)
  • Guards should not have an ornamental pattern that would provide a ladder effect (1021.3).
