Custom Systems

Lapeyre Stair's platforms, legs, crossover systems and metal stairs can be integrated in a multitude of configurations, based on stair application, size, and material requirements.

The cost of the customized stair system includes:

  • Review of selected stair models, design requirements, and building codes by in-house engineer
  • CAD model of the component system quoted for the client
  • Layout drawings

Platforms

Formed Single Piece Platforms

Compatible with the Alternating Tread Stair and the Model 01AA/02AA stairs, this platform is a single piece of metal, cut and formed to create the walking surface, the kick plates, and the mounting plates for the stairs. Handrails bolt from underneath the plate. This platform is ideal for crossover systems, intermediate landings, exit landings, and equipment access platforms.

ANGLES The handrails are bent so that the rail of the platform conforms to the rail of the stair. For this reason, customer service will ask the angle of the stair if the platform is to be used with an alternating tread stair.

Typically, the limits are 54" wide and 144" long, but Lapeyre's engineers can work on a modified design or on sections that bolt together to create larger platforms. Another option for larger platforms is a drop in panel platform.
HANDRAILS Handrails are 42" above the landing, and the configuration depends on the application. Handrails are provided on sides without stair mountings. The rails are the same 1½" OD tubing as the rail of the stairs. Aluminum clamps are provided to connect the stair handrail to the platform handrail.
Drop-in Panel Platforms

The flexible drop­-in panel platform is compatible with all of the Lapeyre steel stairs and is the only platform that will work with the Model 03AA and 04AA bolted egress stair models. This model is ideal for complicated stair systems because it has none of the size limitations of the single formed platforms.

*THE FRAMING ON THIS PLATFORM IS 8" HIGH. THE STAIR MOUNTS TO THE TOP OF THE 8". THEREFORE, IN CALCULATING THE STAIR HEIGHT FOR A CROSSOVER, ADD 8" TO PROVIDE THE CLEARANCE NEEDED UNDER THE CROSSOVER SYSTEM.

Z­-channel framing utilizes the same design as the stringers on the Model 01AA - 04AA bolted egress stairs. The balusters of the guardrail slide through the frame and attach using provided spacers and bolts just as they do on the stairs.

The modular design and drop­-in sections allow for much larger platforms than single piece formed platforms. Lapeyre's customer service representatives work with clients and in­-house designers to determine the best size and layout for each project.

Panels attach to 3" C-­Channel supports either parallel with or perpendicular to the framing.

By default, handrails end on the platforms. However, fully integrated handrails that continue from the stair onto the platform are available upon request.

Available with either a fully balustered design or with filler panels.

Welded Platform Systems

Platforms used with Lapeyre's Model 10AA welded egress stairs are customized to meet individual project requirements and harmonize with the selected stairs, creating an integrated stair system.

GUARDRAILS AND HANDRAILS Guardrails and handrails are constructed of 1-½ O.D. tubing. Guardrail height is fixed at 42". Handrail height is adjustable within the range allowed by applicable code.

La for Crossover Systems

Designed to maximize the stability of Lapeyre Crossover Systems with stairs up to 8' tall and platforms up to 8' long, the convenient Crossover Bracing Kit includes:

  • Brackets: Stainless Steel upper and lower connections, plus hardware.
  • Custom Brace Tubing: Available in carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. Tubing length will vary according to the Crossover configuration.

Platforms

Once fabricated, the bracing allows for approximately 1" of adjustment during installation to account for minor inaccuracies in floor anchor drilling. To determine the correct brace specifications for a Crossover System, the following information is required for Bracing Kit orders:

  • Basic dimensions of obstacles under and near the Crossover System.
  • Optimal spread angle: Spread angle range is 0 to 20 degrees for 56 degree angle stairs and 0 to 10 degrees for 68 degree angle stairs.
  • Optimal brace angle: Brace angle range is 20 to 30 degrees (from vertical plane) for all configurations.

Clients may consult with Lapeyre's Customer Service Representatives to determine optimal brace and spread angles based on Crossover stair height, platform length, and obstacle dimensions. Architects, engineers, and specifiers may also choose to use the attached Excel Spreadsheet in determining the proper bracing for an application.

Legs for Platform Systems

Lapeyre's computerized system calculates the correct leg size for each pre­-engineered egress stair and platform configuration while the in­-house design team works with customer service to determine the best scenario for non­-standard designs.

Legs are constructed out of either 3" or 4" square tubing, depending on the strength requirements of the stair height and platform size. Bracing is added to the legs of taller units if Lapeyre's computer system or design team determine additional strength is necessary.

An in­-house engineer will review conditions that require fewer or more than the standard four legs. When a platform is being connected to a wall, in some cases, the four leg system will be reduced to two legs.

The legs typically connect at the ⅜" thick baseplate at the bottom using 4 bolts and at the top ¼" base plate to the underside of the platform using 3 bolts. For multi­-level stair systems and towers, the legs can run on the outside of the platform and attach from the side.
